Anyone who has ever run a marathon knows that it is a grueling race. You don't wake in the morning and say, "Oh the Boston Marathon is today, I think I'll run it." No, in order to run a marathon one must train and prepare physically and mentally for the race. Endurance is required and must be developed in order to successfully finish a marathon . The marathoner commits to rigorous training, changing habits, diets and routines to prepare for race day. Life is sometimes described as a race in the Bible. ...let us run with patience the race that is set before us...(Heb 12:1b). I have fought a good fight, I finished my course - IITim4:7; Ye did run well...(Gal 5:7a). Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain -I Cor 9:24. This race of life is not a sprint but rather a grueling marathon. The race is not to the swift (Ec 9:11). Hebrews 10:36 makes it clear: For ye have need of patience that after ye have done the will of God ye might receive the promise. ' The word patience in that verse means hopeful endurance. Just like the marathon runner prepares for the race and commits to rigorous training to develop the necessary endurance, we have be spiritually prepared for the race of life if we are going to finish well. Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible - I Cor 9:24-25. Our training involves spending consistent time in the Word, praying, worshipping God with other believers, and being instructed in the Word of God. Our daily diets must change, feeding on the word day and night. These practices strengthen our spiritual muscles. In addition to our plan, God has a training plan called tribulation and testing that we must go through so that endurance can be developed in our lives. Rom 5:3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also, knowing that tribulation worketh patience and patience, experience, and experience hope. God allows trouble to come into our lives so that we learn how to depend upon Him and persevere through difficulty. We endure hardship, experiencing the faithfulness of God, and His strengthening power; while He develops character and endurance in us. James 1:2-4: My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into divers temptations knowing that the trying of your faith worketh patience, but let patience have her perfect work, that you may be perfect and entire wanting nothing. Every time we are faced with irritations, difficult bosses and people, God does not want us to run away from the situation; instead, we are to let patience finish her workout because these tests are developing our ability to endure, so that we can finish our course. Life requires perseverance because there are some rough stretches on our course... In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world (John 16:33b). Now thanks be unto to God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ (II Cor 2:14a)! Time to train! preparing for the race, Diane P.S. Examine your training routine. Are you practicing reading His word? Do you need to incorporate more time praying? How about worship? Does your diet need to change? Do you find yourself feeding on social media and entertainment more than the word? As we pursue the blessed life, we find ourselves on the hillside of Capernaum at the feet of Jesus. The blessed life Jesus is about to describe, in Matthew chapter 5, is one that is filled with joy, hope and spiritual abundance that surpasses the human experience and is more associated with divine experience. He begins the conversation in Matthew 5:3 with the first Beatitude: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed (happy, to be envied, and spiritually prosperous-with life joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the poor in spirit (humble, who rate themselves insignificant), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven! (AMP)
The meaning of the greek word used for poor in this verse actually means a beggar on the street. Jesus is not saying we have to be financially broke to be spiritually blessed, but rather we have to recognize that our spiritual condition is much like the physical condition of the beggar on the street. Spiritually we are bankrupt apart from Jesus. Picture the homeless person on the street, depleted, without any means or resources to change his or her situation. The homeless are destitute, desperate, and completely dependent upon someone else to have mercy on them for their sustenance, and frankly their survival. The spiritually abundant life begins when we humble ourselves before God, and we relinquish our confidence in and reliance upon ourselves. The abundant life that seems to evade us, requires the acknowledgement that we are spiritually bankrupt and totally in need of and dependent upon the Lord's mercy and grace daily. It is in our daily desperation and dependence that we see the power and presence of the Lord Jesus manifested in our lives. Our daily struggle is this: being self reliant versus totally dependent upon the Lord. I know we like our social media posts to make it seem like we have it all the together, but until we come to Jesus, daily desperate and dependent, we are not going to experience the abundant life that He came to give us: I have come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly (John 10:10b). The parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector in Luke 18 perfectly depicts self confidence and self reliance versus the the desperate and totally dependent. And He spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote his breast, saying,God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted (Luke 18:9-14) I can't help but think if we could ever stop being sooo impressed with ourselves, we might see the power of God truly operating in our lives. daily trying to acknowledge my dependence and desperation, Diane p.s. truth be told, spiritually I am like the homeless person totally depleted, destitute and dependent upon the Lord's mercy and grace to sustain me. There are days when my I am dragging my shopping cart to the throne of grace with 3 wheels instead of 4. p.p.s. I sing a "ole skool" prayer meeting song often in the shower to remind daily of my desperation. I need thee O I need thee. Every hour I need thee. O bless me now my Savior I come to Thee. If you ever been to one of those prayer meetings you know we sang this song slow and almost moaning because we understood our need. Praise the Lord we are still standing! For the past several months I've been growing in grace with an amazing group of women. Our journey has taken us through a spiritual warfare study. It was not the typical Ephesians 6:10, put on the whole armor lesson; instead, we learned to wage war daily against the ungodly attitudes that rise up in us. Whew, this has been a challenging and convicting leg of the journey. Our study concluding in Matthew 5, The Beatitudes. And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain: and when He was set, His disciples came unto Him: And He opened His mouth, and taught them, saying...blessed are... ( Matt 5:1-2). At this point in His ministry, Jesus had reached the pinnacle of His popularity. The setting for the sermon On The Mount is a hillside near Capernaum, and took place over a course of several days in front of a growing crowd. So as Jesus started His discourse, He began to describe the characteristics of people who belong to the kingdom of heaven, answering the question who on earth are we? Or better yet, Who are earth should we be? It is clear to me that if today Jesus were to post the Beatitudes on Instagram and FB, the likes would be few and the follows even less. But we should not be surprised because, Jesus was radical in His thinking. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts - Is 55:8-9. He makes it clear that as believers who we should be on earth are not people whose primary pursuit is power, popularity, prominence, or prosperity. The blessed life He describes has nothing at all to do with any of the aforementioned things. This blessed life He describes is a spiritual state of being filled with such an abundance of joy, peace, comfort and intimacy with Him it surpasses what was normally attributed to any human experience. Interested in living that kind of blessed life? Journey with us over the course of the next few posts to discover, how to live that blessed life and to discover who on earth we should be as we examine the Beatitudes. desiring to live the blessed life, Diane Anxiety still managing to make its way into your daily life, even though you have been crying out to Jesus? What else can we do, besides turn off the television and cry out to Jesus to help us manage the chaos we are experiencing? The writer to the Hebrews encourages us to go before God with confidence with the expectation that we will receive exactly what we need when we need it (specific grace). Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace , that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need - Heb 4:16 (KJV); Let us with (privilege ) approach the throne of grace (that is God's gracious favor) with confidence and without fear, so that we may receive mercy (for our failures) and find (His amazing ) grace to help in time of need (an appropriate blessing, coming just at the right moment)-Heb 4:16 AMP. We are urged to go to the throne of grace to receive what Jesus has already ordered and prepared for us. We can go boldly before the throne of grace when we start to feel anxious and overwhelmed because we have a Great High Priest who ever lives to make intercession for us: but on the other hand, Jesus holds His priesthood permanently and without change, because He lives on forever. Therefore He is able also to save forever (completely, perfectly, for eternity) those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede and intervene on their behalf (with God) - Heb 7:24-25 AMP. Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an High Priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens - Heb 8:1. . When life overwhelms us we are to look up to the throne of grace, knowing that Jesus has cried out and is crying out on our behalf, and is praying for us, and has already secured, and prepared the grace and mercy needed for our situation. His prayers for us are not general ones, like Father bless them, or like the ones we often pray for people when they ask us to pray for them. His prayers for us are not only specific but they are sympathetic. For we do not have a High Priest who is unable to sympathize and understand our weaknesses and temptations, but One who has been tempted (knowing exactly how it feels to be human) in every respect as we are, yet without (committing any) sin - Heb 4:15 AMP. In other words, Jesus knows exactly how to pray for us because He has been through and felt all the things we are going through and are feeling? Yes He too felt forsaken by the Father, as He cried out My God My God why hast thou forsaken me? So He knows how we feel and He knows how to pray for us. Jesus' earthly life and ministry prepared Him for His heavenly ministry of Great High Priest. He became flesh and experienced uncertainty, anxiety, stress so that when He returned to heaven He could pray for us because He knows how it feels to be anxious. So no matter what we are feeling, anxious, forsaken, angry, confused or whatever, we have to drag ourselves, if need be, to the throne of grace looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. He will pour out the mercy and grace needed to make it through another day. Honestly some days I am so empty, I have to crawl to the throne, but I always receive the mercy for my failures and grace that has been custom designed for my dilemmas. crawling to the throne, Diane p.s. practice going to throne with the expectation to receive, everything you need to make it. Fear. Worry. Stress. Anxiety. Unfortunately, these are emotions that we are all way too familiar with right now. While these emotions and thoughts attempt to arrest our joy, remember that we not only have a God we can cry out to, we have a God who hears and answers our prayers. Hear my cry, O God, Listen to my prayer. From the the end of the earth I call to You, when my heart is overwhelmed lead me to the rock that is higher than I - Ps 61:2. In the midst of this pandemic: God is our refuge and strength (mighty and impenetrable), A very present and well-proved help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change ...Ps46:1-2a AMP. In this midst of this crisis: Trust in Him at all times ye people, pour out your heart before Him: God is a refuge for us- Ps 62:8. We have a place where it is safe to bare our souls and to wring out our fears and worries, and a Person who has the power to deliver us from them. Fearful? Cry out to Him: Jesus! Ridden with anxiety? Cry out to Him: Jesus! Worried about the health of loved ones? Cry out to Him: Jesus! When my children were small, I remember times after a day filled with sibling arguments, saying to them if you call my name one more time...Thank God I can wear out the Name of Jesus, knowing He is inclining His ear toward me every time I call upon His Name: Jesus! The Name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe - Pro 18:10. When we call upon His Name, He provides a safe place in Him where we are protected! Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily - Ps 86:3. In my distress, I called upon the Lord, And cried unto my God for help. He heard my voice out of His temple, And my cry for help came before Him, even into His ears - Ps 18:6. As we brace for these next couple of weeks, Cry out: Jesus! Be Still, and Know that I am God...The Lord of host is with us: The God of Jacob is our refuge -Ps 46: 10a-11. crying out, Diane p.s. when fear, stress worry, anxiety or any other negative thought or emotion overwhelms you cry out: Jesus! There is power in His Name! #cryout #SaytheName Just came back from an amazing Women's Retreat. The Lord used that time to Rebuild my faith, my hope and my joy. Believe you me, I so needed rebuilding. The everyday grind of life had begun to deplete my energy and douce my enthusiasm. Do you find yourself at times feeling discouraged, heavy and weighed down by life? My prayer is that Lord will build you up and strengthen you. And now brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified - Acts 20:32. Paul realized this was the last time he would see the Elders at the Church of Ephesus, in his farewell address to them he highlights in this verse three things that will help build us up: commending things to God, constructing our lives on the foundation of the Word, and contemplating our future inheritance. Paul knew that the Church was about to come under tremendous attack and he would not be there to protect them. So he commended them to our Heavenly Father. In other words he carried them to God and deposited them with Him, entrusting Him to protect them, provide for them and perfect those things which concerned them. If we are going to be built up and not broken down we too must learn to commend things to our Heavenly Father in prayer. Our problems and the people we are concerned about consume us and the weight of worry burdens us. We must learn to cast all our care upon Him for He cares for us - I Pet 5:7. In Luke chapter 5, Jesus was in town ...and the power of the Lord was present to heal them - Luke 5:17b. There was a paralytic man who had some friends who were determined to get him in front of Jesus so that he could be healed. They put him on a bed and carried him to Jesus; unfortunately, it was a sold out crowd, and they could not get him in front of Jesus. I can imagine them in their effort to get their friend to Jesus, saying excuse me, excuse me, trying to make their way through the crowd, only to be meant with rolling eyes and indignant looks that screamed you should have gotten here earlier. And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch in the midst. And when Jesus saw their faith, He said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee...Arise, and take up thy couch, go into thine house - Luke 5:20, 24b. These men were so committed to laying the paralytic at the feet of Jesus they climbed up on the roof, starting tearing the roof apart so they could get him to Jesus. We must show that same persistent to lay at the feet of Lord the people and the problems that are weighing us down. Who are you so worried about that it is a weight, wearing you out ? It's time to put them on your stretched out faith, commend them to our Heavenly Father in the Name of Jesus. Lay them at the feet of our Heavenly Father. Entrust Him to heal, help and provide for them. Commend them to God! laying some people and some issues at His feet, Diane p.s. Identify the issues and the people you need to lay on on your stretched out faith carry them to the Lord. Every time you begin to worry commend them to your Heavenly Father. Today was no different than any other day for us. Whether we were cognizant of it or not, we were in the midst of spiritual warfare. Unfortunately, far too many of us on far too many days are not aware of the warfare that Satan wages against us daily to discourage our faith and to make us ineffective for Christ. We are far more engaged with the conflicts we have with each other, completely ignoring the fact the Bible informs us that our fight is not against flesh and blood: For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places - Eph 6:12. We must wake up and get prepared to fight daily: Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind) be vigilant and cautious at all times: for that enemy of yours, the devil roams around like a lion roaring (in fierce hunger), seeking someone to seize upon and devour - (I Pet 5:8 AMPC). Satan is waging a warfare of influence and the spiritual battlefield is in our minds. He is attempting to infiltrate our thinking so our thought life will not reflect God's truth about ourselves, others or our situation. Nor does his thoughts reflect God's ways. Once we grasp hold of his demonic thinking, we wrap our emotions around those thoughts and we find ourselves feeling discouraged, defeated and doomed to acting in ways that are not consistent with our faith. We don't have to own those thoughts. Remember we are in it to win it! So how do we fight? Resistance! So submit to (the authority of) God. Resist the devil (stand firm against him) and he will flee - James 4:7 and Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world - I Pet 5:9. How do we resist? Opposition. Oppose the lies he is putting in your thoughts with the truth, God's thoughts. Satan will have us thinking crazy thoughts about ourselves, crazy thoughts about other people, crazy thoughts about our lives and crazy thoughts about our God. We must resist him steadfast in the faith and by faith. Jesus resisted the temptations of the devil by resisting the influence of the devil with the truth of the word. But he answered and said, it is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeded out of the mouth of God - Matt 4:4 We win the battle one thought at a time. For we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to pulling down of strongholds) Casting down imagination, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ - II Cor 10:3-5. We must gird up the loins of our minds -I Pet 1:13a. Bring our wondering thoughts in, arrest our thought life and don't let any thought loose to have free reign in our lives until we identify its source. Is the thought from God or Satan? Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God's word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things (center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart) - Phil 4:8. We have to bring in our wandering minds; minds that are consumed with thinking about getting our nails done, our next social media post, what we are going fix for dinner, or what we have to get done tomorrow at work. We must be alert, aware, and prepared to dismiss every wrong thought because Satan is daily ambushing us, waging war in our minds. Recently I experienced the danger of not bringing my thoughts into captivity. I allowed my adult kids this summer to convince me to get on a body waterslide. Now I know I don't like body slides; nevertheless, I succumbed to their pressure. So as I started down this winding dark slide which was initially very slow moving, I started having a conversation with myself: What in the world was I thinking? Why did I let them convince me to get on this thing? I hate body waterslides. I was frustrated with myself, angry even. All of sudden I accelerated as the slide took a 90 degree dip, plunging me into the water. Because my mind had been filled with thoughts of frustration and self anger, I was shocked and unprepared when I hit the water. I had not thought about what I was supposed to do when I entered the water. I opened my eyes underwater saw a tank and thought I had to swim to the top, so I panicked. As I come up for air, arms flying everywhere, my kids and everyone else are on the side looking at me like I am crazy. The lifeguard is approaching me asking if I am okay and can I swim. Insulted and embarrassed, I said yes, so I quickly regrouped and proceeded to swim to the side with the smooth stroke I am known for in my family. Spiritually, that's what happens to us when we allow our thought life to have free reign. Suddenly, without warning, we will find ourselves in situations we are totally unprepared for, disoriented, discouraged, defeated and often we end up responding with disobedient. Let's gird up the loins of mind, bring our thoughts into captivity and reject any thinking that is not true, honest and pure ! fighting wrong thinking and resisting the devil with truth, Diane p.s. start paying attention to what you are thinking. Fill your mind with truth. Dismiss self talk that does not line up with what God say's about you, others, Himself or your situation! Wow it's been way too long since I last checked in with you. Forgive me. Like you, I struggle to stay focused, and to not get distracted and derailed by the enemy or self. But I remain confident. Remember that was my word for 2018, because He who hath begun a good work in us shall continue to perform it until the day of Jesus Christ - Phil 1:6. Let's continue to have confidence when we pray not just because the Lord hears us: I love the Lord, because He hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because He hath inclined His ear unto me, therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live - Ps 116:1-2; let's also have confidence because the Holy Spirit helps us. Ever feel like you don't know how to pray or what to say to God? Frustrating right? During these times we must keep talking to God, letting Him know we don't know how to pray. The Lord knew we would have times like this. Times when we just can't find the words to pray while we wait for Him to come through: we groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body- Rom 8:23. We can continue to pray with confidence even we can't find the words. Why? Because the Holy Spirit groans with us, feeling the burdens of our weaknesses and sufferings. In His groaning He prays that we would be led to the will of God. Even when we don't know what to say or when we pray for things outside of God's will, the Holy Spirit feels our pains and overrides our prayers with prayers according to the will of God on our behalf. The man in the image is called a Sherpa. In China these Sherpas met us to carry our bags up the mountain because our loads were too heavy of a burden for us to carry. So too the Holy Spirit comes to our aid and bears us in weakness; for we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance. And He Who searches the hearts of men knows what is in the mind of the (Holy) Spirit (what His intent is), because the Spirit intercedes and pleads (before God) in behalf of the saints according to and in harmony with God's will - Rom 8:26-27 AMP. During those times when all we can do is moan, we can remain confident because the Holy Spirit is translating our moans and groans into the will of God; therefore, we can know all things work together for good to them that love God, to them that are the called according to His purpose - Rom 8:28. Blessed be the Lord, Who bears our burdens and carries us day by day, even the God who is our salvation - Ps 68: 19. so glad I have help, DIane p.s. spend some time this week thanking God for the Holy Spirit. Whenever you are confused about how to pray or frustrated when you pray, know that the Holy Spirit has grabbed your load, wrapped it in God's will, and carried it before God on your behalf. As we put our full trust and belief in the power, trustworthiness and reliability of the Lord Jesus Christ, we gain confidence for the journey. Not only are we are confident because He who hath begun a good work in us shall continue to perform until the day of Jesus Christ ( Phil 1:6), we can also have confidence when we pray: And this is the confidence that we have in Him,that if we ask any thing according to His will, He heareth us: And we if we know that He heareth us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him (I John 5:14-15). We can pray with confidence because the Lord hears us, the Holy Spirit helps us, our High Priest intercedes for us, and our hearts our kept by His peace. Today let's begin praying with confidence knowing that the Lord hears us.. Have there been times when you prayed wondering if God is even listening? Ever been tempted to stop praying because you don't feel any better, or because nothing seems to change? It is easy to doubt and to become discouraged, but don't ever stop praying, keep talking to Him because He hears us. Every time we cry out to God we can cry out with confidence and assurance because He sees our affliction and hears our cries. In my distress (when seemingly closed in) I called upon the Lord and cried to my God; He heard my voice out of His temple (heavenly dwelling place), and my cry came before Him, into His (very) ears - Ps 18:6 AMP. I waited patiently and expectantly for the Lord; and He inclined to me and heard my cry - Ps 40:1 AMP. I love the Lord, because He hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because He hath inclined His ear unto me, therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live - Ps 116:1-2. When we cry out to God He inclines (bends) His ear toward us. Picture God the Father in heaven pulling His ear forward so that He can give our cries His undivided attention. I am sure that is why David wrote: I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out out of all his troubles - Ps 34:4,6. We pray with confidence because the Lord hears us. Our cries go into His ears, so we must keep praying. praying with confidence, Diane p.s. this week when you pray envision the Lord leaning forward and bending His ear as your cries go into His ears. My emphasis word for 2018 is Confidence. Confidence means the full trust; belief in the powers, trustworthiness, or reliability of a person or thing. As we continue our journey this year let us fully put our trust in and believe in the power and trustworthiness of the Lord. So this year, I am encouraged and excited because my confidence is in the Lord. We should have confidence in 2018 because being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ - Phil1:6. Maybe you started this year looking back with regret because another year has come and gone and you are still not where you thought you would be at this point in your life. Or perhaps after a month into the new year, a year that started with such promise, you find yourself falling into the same habits you promised to change. Well, ...forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, let us press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus - Phil 3:13b-14. This is our year of confidence. So when we get down on ourselves. Or we look around and feel stuck, discouraged or frustrated at our lack of progress, let's ask ourselves: why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God - Ps42:5. Remember that we are God's masterpiece still being created by our Divine Creator. The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me... Ps 138:8. For we are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them - Eph 2:10. We are instructed to put no confidence in the flesh - Phil 3:3. Instead of confidence in self, our confidence is the Lord. He has a begun a good work in us and He will continue to do that work in us. When we can't He will. Commit thy works unto the Lord and thy thoughts will be established -Pro 16:3. putting my confidence in the Lord, Diane |
